DESTINATION: DESTINY USA

January 8 and 9 at Destiny USA

Our January FM is at Destiny USA on Saturday, January 8 and Sunday, January 9, 2022. The mall is generously letting us meet again on the first floor of the Canyon area close to the entrance to Dick’s – the same place as last year, although I understand Cantina Laredo is no longer there. Perhaps some new stores or eateries will fill the spot. There are large parking lots on Solar Street which will let you enter via the escalator up and across the pedestrian bridge over Hiawatha Blvd. Then you need to descend to the first floor by either the nearby down escalator or an elevator which is a little farther along. Remember to sign up for your 2022 Annual Membership Pass or Yearly Passport. Masks and social distancing are still the order of the day.

Find more information in the January Footnotes.

Three walk options:

  1. Indoors, walking the perimeter of all four (4) floors of the mall is a full 5K.
  2. Head outside and follow signs for the Onondaga Creekwalk. (Creekwalk map)
  3. An alternate outdoor route to Franklin Park:
  • Start at the check in at Destiny
    • Leave Destiny from doors on Hiawatha Blvd & Solar St. either from 2nd Floor – thru walkway and down escalator OR from 1st Floor – cross Hiawatha Blvd @ the light.
    • Travel straight up Solar St.
    • Solar St. ends at the intersection of Plum St. (Freedom of Espresso will be on your right – it’s open every day until 4:00.) Cross the street and continue straight to Creek Walk. (Cars can’t go this way, but walkers can.)
    • Turn right onto Creek Walk (see sign: Creek Walk Mile 1.7 Zone B8)
    • Continue along Creek Walk until you see the Amphitheater on your right at Inner Harbor;
    • Turn right – see the sign: A Harbor for Syracuse.
    • Then choose from the following options:
      • turn right at the sign; head back to Solar St; turn left on Solar St; head back to Destiny. (For extra ½ mile, before entering Destiny turn left on Hiawatha Blvd and continue on Creek Walk (yellow line) to the shore of Onondaga Lake and then back to Destiny.) –OR–
      • turn left at the sign; continue on Creek Walk until Hiawatha Blvd; turn right; head back to Destiny. (For extra ½ mile, continue on Creek Walk to the shore of Onondaga Lake and then back to Destiny.)

Highlights from Our December Folksmarch

A Bright & Beautiful December Day in Fulton

Sunday was sunny and unusually warm for mid December at the Folksmarch in Fulton. Walkers said it was a little windy when crossing the bridges but it was a gorgeous day to walk and observe the upgrades the city has made since the last time Folksmarch had a walk in Fulton. The river sparkled and the sun lifted everyone’s spirits. At the Moose Lodge there were more than enough pizzas with various toppings, soda, and scrumptious home-made cookies from our out-going President, Mary Ledford. (I want the recipe for those cookies with raspberry on top!) People enjoyed the food, the Christmas music, the conversation and the general air of joy and celebration. After lunch Mary presided over a short Annual Meeting, ending with a farewell speech in which she thanked everyone for their participation and help, and said she is looking forward to Folksmarch continuing for another 40 years

November Walk at Green Lakes

As a follow-up to our 40th Anniversary Walk and Celebration, our November walk takes us back to one of our favorite spots, Green Lakes State Park.

Green Lakes State Park’s outstanding features are its two glacial lakes surrounded by upland forest. Both Round and Green Lakes are meromictic lakes, which means that there is no fall and spring mixing of surface and bottom waters. Such lakes have a high potential for evidence of ancient plant and animal life. Round and Green Lakes are 2 of the just 17 meromictic lakes in the United States. Glacier Lake at Clark’s Reservation is also a meromictic lake as well as Ballston Lake in Albany and Devil’s Bathtub in Rochester.

Join us as we walk the lake trails of Round Lake (.9 mi) and Green Lake (1.9 mi) and the Tween Lakes Trail (.4 mi). We will meet near the West Beach Restrooms.

A quiet place that says “open until dark” and is being upgraded consistently.

Labrador Hollow in Fabius NY: July 10th & 11th

On July 10 & 11 we’ll try a new spot, Labrador Hollow Unique Area located on Labrador Road (no road number) in Tully, NY. Maintained by the Department of Environmental Conservation, the 1,474-acre conservation area is located in both Onondaga and Cortland Counties. Dogs on a leash are permitted. The area also allows hunting, fishing– they have a boat launch on the west end of the pond–and almost 5 miles of trails. The DEC website states: “Labrador Hollow’s topography is responsible for its unique character. The area is located in the middle of a valley running north to south that was dug out by glacial movement….Massive ice sheets from the last glaciation episode…retreated from the area approximately ten thousand years ago. They left behind numerous sedimentary deposits and superficial features, some of which filled with water and are now called the Finger Lakes, while others became known as valleys. The floor of Labrador Hollow’s valley is only about one-half mile wide, but its walls rise abruptly for several hundred feet.”

We check in next to Labrador Pond, a shallow pond that supports several warm-water fish species and aquatic vegetation. There is a very nice handicapped-accessible boardwalk of about one-quarter mile that is well worth a visit, as is Tinker Falls which is down Rt. 91 about 1.2 miles and which has a small parking lot opposite the entrance to the Falls – 2nd parking pull-off with room for about 15 cars, after you see the Cortland County sign. There is also a small lot for handicapped parking on the left (Tinker Falls) side of the road. The parking lot next to the Cortland County sign is a bit larger and is close to the Tinker Falls lot (in case the Tinker Falls lot is full).

There is no shelter, but we will have a sign-in table at the far end of the parking lot close to the portapotty enclosure and the path to the boardwalk. Another option for bathroom facilities could be the Burger King at the end of the Tully exit ramp, or the Circle K which is located on the left side of the road shortly after you turn onto Rt. 80, next to the entrance ramp to 81 N.

Directions From Syracuse, take Rt. 81 S to exit 14 (Tully), then go left onto Rt. 80 E for about 12 miles (past Apulia Station) to Apulia, right onto Rt. 91 S for about 2.7 miles, right onto the road into the Unique Area (no sign stating it’s Labrador Crossing Rd.) at the 2nd sign for Labrador Hollow, and the 1st left into the parking lot. From the other direction on Rt. 80 W, it would be a left turn onto Labrador Crossing Rd. not far after the sign for Onondaga County.

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Cazenovia: June 12 & 13

Enjoy the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park on June 12 & 13, 2021 located at 3883 Stone Quarry Road, Cazenovia, NY 13035 where you and your dog can walk on the wide, mowed grassy paths surrounding acres of open areas sprinkled with imaginative, often very large artistic sculptures and vistas of Madison County landscape, as well as narrow forest trails. Just remember your animal must be on a leash and you pick up any droppings.

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park was founded by artist Dorothy Riester and her husband Bob. Dorothy and Bob purchased and began shaping the property in the early 1960s. The Art Park was established in 1991 as a means of gifting the land for public use. The Art Park is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, open to the public 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. The site consists of 104 acres of meadows, forest and ponds with 4 miles of hiking trails and a rich collection of outdoor sculpture. The Dorothy Riester House and Studio are listed on the National Register of Historic Places for their architectural and artistic significance. (Thanks to the Art Park for permission to use this description.)

We will meet at the covered area between the bathrooms and one of the brown wood buildings at the top of the hill. As you come up the long entrance you will pass buildings on your left, but you continue to the parking areas just ahead of you. Then you walk back on the other side of the buildings to where our tables are set up. The two restrooms have composting toilets, are large, airy and comfortable with sinks but the water is not for drinking, so please bring your own water.

The outside art exhibits do change periodically and since the Dorothy Riester house is open by appointment only, and the Studio and Art Gallery will be closed on the weekend, you will have a good reason to come back to this CNY gem!

An April Walk at Marcellus Park: April 10th and 11th

Our April Folksmarch takes us to a 52-acre park in the Village of Marcellus, NY.

There are over 2 miles of trails with Nine Mile Creek running through the lower section of the park. It is a great place to walk, play fetch with your dog, go for a jog, play tennis or baseball, and enjoy butterflies and wildlife. The park has been managed by the Town of Marcellus since obtaining it from Onondaga County in 1995. About 10 years later, a dedicated group of volunteers formed to help the town maintain and care for the park. Working together, the Parks Department and the Friends of Marcellus Park have provided upgrades to the playground, more electricity at the pavilions, replaced trees, provided a new concession stand and have made improvements to the Welcome Center. They have also arranged several events throughout the years including Olde Home Days, Summer Concerts, an Art Show, and a Fall Festival. Sounds like there is something for every season at Marcellus Park.

Enter at the Upper Entrance to the park, and check-in will be at the Playground Pavilion to the left. There is ample parking available. The park is dog friendly as long as dogs are on a leash, and please pick up after your pet. The walk is also stroller friendly and families are welcome. Most trails are gravel paths with a few slight inclines throughout the 5K route.
