A Walk Back in Time

SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM AND SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Lucius Gleason Mansion, 314 Second Street, Liverpool, NY 13088.

CNY Folksmarch will combine a village walk, a historical walking tour, and the walking path at Onondaga Lake Park during our March Folksmarch.

The Greater Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has been working with us to make Liverpool the place to visit on Saturday, March 8th or Sunday, March 9th. Our walkers always enjoy a village walk because it gives them achance to really see a community instead of just driving through it on theway to somewhere else.

The Chamber is located in the Lucius Gleason Mansion, which will be our registration location. The mansion is located at 314 Second Street, Liverpool, NY 13088. Walkers may enter the mansion at the front door facing Second Street, or use the ramp entrance facing Sycamore Street. Check out the Liverpool Village Walking Tour or Oswego Street Walking Tour.

Folksmarch at Beaver Lake Nature Center

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM AND SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Beaver Lake Nature Center, 8477 East Mud Lake Road, Baldwinsville, NY 13027.

A favorite spot for CNY Folksmarch is Beaver Lake Nature Center -partly because it is one of the few winter locations where we can find well-groomed trails to walk, but mainly because of the natural beauty and pleasant surroundings. The dense tree coverage, even with significant snowfall in the area, usually means that BLNC has at least 3 walkable trails. This is also a great location for those who bring their own cross-country skis. Another option might be to bring snowshoes or rent a pair for $5 per hour. The usual Folksmarch rates will be in place, but we are pleased that BLNC management has again graciously offered to waive the parking fee for Folksmarchers.

Let’s start the new year with a walk around the Village of Cazenovia. It has been quite a few years since we enjoyed walking in this community. We thought it would be a perfect place for a winter walk.

The route will include the perimeter of the former Cazenovia College (officially closed on June 30, 2023), up and down some slight grades on village streets. You will walk along main street, the village green, and the village walking trail (if weather permits).

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 9:00 AM –12:00 PM AND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1:00 PM –3:00 PM, Clear Path for Veterans, 1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenango, NY.

The Clear Path campus is located in one of CNY’s most beautiful areas, especially in October.

The trails, which are open to the public daily, are well groomed, hard-packed dirt with very few tree roots. Of course they may be covered with damp leaves in mid-October, but they are mostly level with just some slight inclines. Leashed dogs are allowed with owners cleaning up after them as needed.

Folksmarch at Clark Reservation

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM AND SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Clark Reservation State Park, Jamesville, NY.

The lake at Clark Reservation was created about 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, when glacial water rushed over the limestone capstone in a waterfall of originally 180 feet, creating a plunge basin below. When the glacier retreated, the waterfall ended, leaving the meromictic lake at the bottom of the basin, where the water layers do not mix, as at Green Lakes. The Reservation currently encompasses 75 acres featuring rugged cliffs, rocky outcrops, woods, meadows and a wetland. The Friends of Clark Reservation run a Nature Center and organize events during the summer. No wonder fishermen, bird watchers, naturalists and hikers like Folkmarchers love this park!

June Walk with Nature

Saturday, June 8, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and Sunday, June 9, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PMSterling Nature Center, 15730 Jensvold Rd., Sterling, NY 13156.

It has been a while, but happily we will be revisiting Sterling Nature Center this month. The Folksmarch sign-in table will be located at the brand-new visitor’s education building.

Along the lakeside trails, you can expect some breathtaking views of Lake Ontario, as well as lovely sights of birds, butterflies and flora on the woodland trails and meadows. This time of year is especially enjoyable as the Great Blue Heron rookery is taking place. The trails at SNC are well-groomed and of varying terrain and degrees of challenge, mostly easy to moderate. Depending on the amount of rain we have the week before our Folksmarch, some areas may be muddy. There are plenty of picnic tables for those who pack a lunch or snack to enjoy at this peaceful place. Don’t forget to bring binoculars to best observe the heron nests!
