August Folksmarch & Newsletter

August Folksmarch: Willow Bay at the Lake

Onondaga Lake Park is the suggested location for the August Folksmarch. FM’ers can choose to walk the east or west shore of the lake. We will not be signing in, but will try to observe our usual walk times which are Saturday August 8, 8:00 – 11:00 AM or Sunday August 9, 1:00 – 3:00 PM.

If you wish to get your passport stamped and/or collect your FM buttons for April – August, please look for the Folksmarch banner on display at Willow Bay. Mary Ledford will be at a picnic table distributing the buttons and stamping your passports. If you miss her this month, no worries – you will be able to catch up at another monthly walk.

July Socially Distanced Folksmarch & Newsletter

A Socially Distanced Summer Walk in Skaneateles

Many places are reopening with businesses trying to serve the community in a safe way. We Folkmarchers also want to safely start to transition back to monthly walks at the same location.

Part of the Folksmarch experience is sharing the sights and sounds and beauty of a particular CNY location with like-minded people. With that in mind, we will continue to walk on our own – without a sign-in table or any refreshments or a specific route and a map. But we will suggest that Folksmarchers walk in the Village of Skaneateles on the weekend of July 11 & 12, during the usual time slots.

It is a familiar area for many and quite beautiful in the summer. Some of the shops and eateries have reopened for those who want to stop in or get a take-out lunch and head to a bench by the lake. It is very possible you will see a few familiar faces.

After your walk, please submit your selfies and any interesting tidbits about your walk to cnyfolksmarch@gmail.com to be posted on social media. Send by July 17th to be included in next month’s Footnotes.

FYI: Currently, the municipal parking lot is free, but that may change by mid-July. There are a couple of free lots and some free street parking, but please be prepared to pay a small fee for a convenient parking spot in the Village.

Tip: For this month’s walk or any walk, there is a website (and phone app) called Map My Walk that allows you to map out a route ahead of your walk depending on the distance you might want to walk (you can create a FREE account online). The app on your phone allows you to start your walk and uses your GPS to record where you have walked and will give you notifications for every mile.

The July Footnotes provides additional details about this month’s walk and more.

April VIRTUAL Walk & Newsletter

This April join us for our first ever Virtual Folksmarch!

Talk about positive thinking….we folksmarchers have an opportunity to do something new and exciting while continuing to follow Governor Cuomo’s directives to all New Yorkers.

Rather than gathering at a facility and taking any chances on furthering the spread of Covid19, we plan to have a virtual walk. This will be in place for at least April and May and possibly beyond.

Here’s how it works:

On the specified days (i.e. April 18 or 19) or any day that’s convenient, you go for a walk at a location of your choice. It could be in your neighborhood or a favorite spot that you drive to, while practicing social distancing and being careful to avoid contact with anyone. You could even choose to walk on your home treadmill. Once completed, provide some information (see below) and hopefully a photo or two. The photos and comments will be posted on our social media accounts, along with as many articles as possible in Footnotes.

There will be no charge for the virtual walk at this time, and everyone who participates will receive their commemorative pin the next time we are able to gather. Obviously, this isn’t the same or nearly as social as actually getting together and sharing a walk in the same location, but during these difficult times it seems like a great alternative.

We look forward to getting back to our regular walks and finding some new exciting locations, but until then….this is a great way to keep going with a positive outlook and a way for us all to keep connected during these uncertain, difficult, isolating times.

To write about your walk and submit pictures, please submit by April 20th to cnyfolksmarch@gmail.com. Include the following:

  • Name(s)
  • Location of your walk
  • Distance walked
  • What you saw
  • Likes/Dislikes
  • Any other comments

The April Footnotes provides additional details about this month’s walk and more.
