Join CNY Folksmarch this September as we return to the Great Swamp Conservancy near Canastota for a walk through wetlands, wildlife habitat, and peaceful nature trails!

Registration will take place at the Conservancy’s main information center. The property is located at the corner of North Main Street and Pine Ridge Road.
🚶 About the Walk
The Great Swamp Conservancy offers seven miles of trails through several restored wetland areas, giving us plenty of possibilities for our September walk.
Our planned routes will stay within our usual 5K goal, but remember—Folksmarch isn’t a race or a required distance. Walk as far as you’re interested and able, and enjoy the scenery along the way.
Highlights include:
🪶 Great Blue Heron Rookery – The rookery on the east side trail system can be viewed from the mowed trail and bird blind.
🌿 Wetland Trails – Explore paths through restored wetland habitat and watch for birds and other wildlife along the way.
🚶 900-Foot Boardwalk – Venture onto the west side of the property for a different view of the wetlands.
📷 Bring your binoculars or camera! There’s plenty to see along the trails.
🌾 About the Great Swamp Conservancy
The Great Swamp Conservancy provides opportunities to explore and learn about Central New York’s wetland habitats throughout the year.
In addition to its trails, the Conservancy offers environmental programs for adults and children, picnic areas, and a gift shop.
On Saturday, members of the Swamp Snappers Camera Club will also be onsite during our Folksmarch hours.
Nearby Simpson Park offers a catch-and-release family fishing area and is only about 1/8 mile from the Conservancy’s main location.
👟 Come Prepared for the Trails
September weather can make this walk a little different from month to month!
Some areas of the Conservancy may be very wet after rain, so check the weather before heading out and choose your footwear accordingly.
We recommend bringing:
- Comfortable walking or hiking shoes that can handle wet conditions
- Water
- Insect repellent
- Binoculars or a camera if you enjoy wildlife watching
