Folksmarch in Liverpool

June 11th 9:00 AM-NOON & June 12th 1:00-3:00 PM – Our June Folksmarch will begin at the Liverpool Public Library and will take us on a 5k walk along a portion of the Onondaga Lake trail and also on a tour of many 19th century homes and businesses.

You might also stop at the Salt Museum and find out the origin of salt potatoes and why Syracuse is known as the Salt City. One of the other nationally known products from the area, as recent as 1971, was basketry. The Willow Bay picnic area was named for the abundance of willow bushes and the area became known for its production of laundry baskets and furniture.

5K Hike of Webster Pond and Rand Tract Park

MAY 14th 9:00 AM-NOON & MAY 15th 1:00-3:00 PM – Join us for our May 2022 Folksmarch. Webster Pond is less than .5 miles, but the Rand Tract Park offers several miles of trails. Our check-in will be a table near the top of the Pond’s small parking lot, but after picking up the map, one could also start the walk from the church and (almost) end at Webster’s Pond. See you there Folksmarchers!

Starting at Webster Pond or the church parking lot, we will walk around the Onondaga Valley Cemetery to the entrance of the Rand Tract Park to explore these beautiful wood paths, ending back at Webster Pond where you can feed the ducks.

See the route map (PDF) and instructions for turn-by-turn directions.

Walk Around Webster Pond

MAY 14th 9:00 AM-NOON & MAY 15th 1:00-3:00 PM – This month we visit Webster Pond located at 2004 Valley Drive., Syracuse, NY 13207. Located on the south side of Syracuse, Webster Pond is a small sanctuary for birds and wildlife, open to the public year-round. Originally maintained by the Anglers Association of Onondaga who raise funds by selling bags of feed for the birds on the pond, a new non-profit, Friends of Wildlife, recently has been instituted to allow the group to apply for grants to repair and maintain the area. The Anglers Association offers a Junior Fishing Program and offers concerts by outside vendors during the summer and fall.

Webster Pond

The trail around Webster Pond is wide and handicapped accessible, with seating available at various points. On the south-end of the pond there is access to a narrower path in the wooded Rand Tract which constitutes the major portion of our walk. Because Webster’s Pond has only a small parking lot, with a few spaces available on the side of the road near the Pond, there is other parking available at the nearby St. Paul’s church just a little farther down the road. Our check-in will be a table near the top of the Pond’s small parking lot, but after picking up the map, one could also start the walk from the church and (almost) end at Webster’s Pond.

A Cold, Wet Weekend Walk

Lime Hollow Nature Center

The April Folksmarch was cold and wet, but the Lime Hollow trails were well worth the drive to Cortland. We had about 20 Folksmarchers on Saturday, April 9 and another 16 on Sunday. Many Folksmarchers brought the suggested walking sticks or poles and I think that was helpful along the trails. If you weren’t able to join us, or the weather deterred you, I would definitely suggest you check out these trails on a nicer day. There are over 12 miles of trails and we only explored 3. Those who were able to join us, hope you enjoyed the walk!

Hard work of the local beavers.

Folksmarch through Lime Hollow, Cortland

APRIL 9th 9:00 AM-NOON & APRIL 10th 1:00-3:00 PM – Lime Hollow Nature Center provides year-round opportunities for environmental education and recreation using natural elements of the area. It was founded in 1993, starting with 100 acres of land along an abandoned portion of the Lehigh Valley Railroad right-of-way. This nature preserve, which is located just west of Cortland, grew to almost 300 acres by 1998. The Visitor Center, where Folksmarchers will sign-in, was added in 2007.

Lime Hollow Visitor Center

Sign-in for Folksmarchers will be at the Visitors Center, 338 McLean Rd., Cortland, NY, 13045. There will be a 5k suggested route for Folksmarchers that will include many delights for geology buffs, along with some whimsical outdoor art pieces that children and adults are sure to enjoy.

March Through Cazenovia

MARCH 12th 9:00 AM-NOON & MARCH 13th 1:00-3:00 PM – Cazenovia is one of those special CNY Villages that is fun to explore anytime of the year. Of course, the lake makes for an inviting summer destination, but with so many historical buildings, both residential and commercial, we are sure to enjoy an interesting Folksmarch even during the late winter.

Our walk will take us through some of the residential streets with several Victorian era homes, around Cazenovia College and down the main street with shops, eateries, pubs and, of course, a view of Cazenovia Lake. For much of Caz, it’s as if time has stood still. For instance, the hotel and restaurant named after John Lincklaen, the founder of the Village, was built in 1835. The exterior of The Lincklaen House looks exactly the same as it did back then.

The Folksmarch sign-in will be at the Cazenovia Chamber of Commerce office, 95 Albany St., Suite C. (Even though the address states Albany St., the actual entrance to the building is behind the business that faces on Albany St. #24 on the map.) The office is a small room but has enough space for our sign-in table, a restroom, and a large display of visitor’s information about the area. Anna-Marie Neuland, who proudly works at the Chamber of Commerce, will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Cazenovia.

The entrance to the Chamber of Commerce is in the back of the building near the parking.
